Hi all...i was wondering if you can help me with the above list...i'm trying to put together a kind of classification of UK Racecourses based on finishing direction but i can't figure out on the following ones(i never liked geography):

Aintree
Bangor
Cartmel
Chelmsford
Cheltenham
Exeter
Ffos Lass
Fontwell
Hexham
Huntington
Kelso
Kempton
Market Rasen
Newton
Perth
Plumpton
Sedgefield
Stratford
Taunton
Towcester
Uttoxeter
Wetherby
Windsor
Wolverhampton
Worcester

So if you know which side they finish just reply to this.
i.e Perth-North;Taunton-South-West and so on
Thanks in advance.

Are you saying that the finishing straight at perth is in a northerly direction ?

No Martin...it was only an example...i need to find the finish direction for those courses

But that's what your asking for i.e. the compass direction of the finishing straight at xx racecourse

Can I ask why ?

I'm looking to find any similarities between tracks.I mean,ok,both Ripon and Hamilton have nordish finishes but while at Ripon the 5f run-in is run on minor undulations at Hamilton(which has the same 5f run-in),things are completely different. In here the last part of the circuit, more precisely the last 3f,there are steep gradients into and out of a pronounced hollow, followed by a severe hill to the finish.
I try to implement into this some wind forecast as well-just to check if they are going to run against or with the wind behind
And also, with your pace reports to find contenders

Hi Danny,

In my opinion, with regards to racecourse characteristics, you should really only be concerned with left handed / right handed, flat or undulating etc. There are plenty of websites with that information. Don't tie yourself in knots with worrying about which way the wind may blow on any given day.

Timeforms take on Wind Direction:
"Wind strength and direction
Race times are also very much affected by the strength and direction of the wind prevailing during racing. A wind behind in the straight will assist the runners throughout in all races run on the straight course, but will be adverse to the runners for part of the way in races run on the round track. The times of straight races will be speeded up, but the precise effect upon the times of races run on the round track will depend upon their distances and starting points. Considering the unusual layout of some of the courses in Britain, and remembering that the wind may blow at any strength from any point of the compass, it might be thought that the problem is an intractable one. Nevertheless it can normally be handled quite satisfactorily by vector analysis, provided the direction of the wind is known, conditions do not vary during racing and sufficient data is available. A 10-knot wind makes a great deal of difference to race times, so it is important always to have reliable information as to wind strength and direction, direction particularly. Timeform sees that accurate information is obtained".
Vector Analysis is par for course... ;)
What about straight races??? never mind LH RH. some horses on flat never see a bend...
horses for courses: Hopes N Dreams now 8/11 up Hamilton straight..yet they still run him around a bend :?:

Gosh....I never had a clue about this and I have been punting / trading for 20 years. Not sure how I manage to make a living from trading full time and I have never been concerned about which way the wind blows!!! :) Maybe if I had a degree in meteorology, it may increase my returns even more. I shall not ask what vector analysis is, as I have no idea! I am going to ask a couple of other full timers I know if they pay any heed to this, as I am intrigued to know. Thanks for this post, you learn something everyday. Cheers, Steve
