how about a METER that you need to fill in the form of donations every year, so work out how much it costs for upkeep and time etc., and then donations can keep the meter filled up and the site remains free. a bit like Wikipedia, people can donate to keep it open rather than a subscription thing....... i wouldn't be averse to a monthly sub as long as it was a low fee but i am thinking of a better way of doing it

What would a low fee look like?

Hi Martin

Rather than a low fee, how about a monthly tipping competition. Top tipster gets a free months subscription, something like that would be fun

I would not be winning it anytime soon though

Hi Martin,

I have donated and I am fine fine with every way you decide to go with.

Just one question though: instead of financing the site, would it be possible that the community supports the cost in terms of services or materials? Maybe some patternform users have access to cloud space that could be used for the site. There are free dynamic DNS that could route the traffic and the domain could be transferred to a cheaper provider.

In other words, maybe there are ways to decrease the operating costs of the website.

All the best.

The main operating cost is my time which for the last 17 years I've given for free (pre-donations).

Any latest news Martin?

Did you manage to purchase a new laptop with any donations you received?

Hey Martin,
I was also wondering if you managed to get your laptop yet? As you know I am more than happy to pay a subscription and for sure I wouldn't place any bets without the use of Patternform. I really hoped that you would get much more than 15% donations, but I am sure we are all familiar with the type of friend who is gonna buy the next round of drinks, or pay for the dinner (next time....honestly! ) These people who just never have any cash on them and they just slope off hoping that they will remain unnoticed because there are loads of other people who paid!

There was enough for a new Laptop, and I'm still deciding on the next step - further donations from those who have yet to donate or go straight to subscription.
