Thursday 25th May

Seeing as how today is a holiday for me, we'll see if we can improve the month's rather dismal record.

Goodwood 14.35 Cl 2 Hcap 162 (102) 7f gd – 10 Run

Last year – 162 (100) gd 14 ran
Can’t Change It 7/1 5-8-8 (87) Dr 2 by 2l from Emell 8/1 6-9-7 (100) Dr 3
The Warrior 9/2 F 4-9-1 (94) Dr 9 was 4.35l 6th

Shady McCoy 7-8-8 (89) Dr 8
13 May Cl 2 Hcap (654) 7f gd/fm Ascot (108) 33/1 1.8l 4/24 off 89
Took keen hold, held up well in rear, progress 2f out, threaded through from over 1f out, not clear run and switched inside final furlong, ran on to snatch 4th last stride
Twice a winner here, showed his April return over 8f at Nottingham to be all wrong when threading his way through to a fast-finishing 4th in the Victoria Cup at Ascot with The Warrior (-6) less than 0.5l back in 8th; with the in-form De Sousa in the saddle and off 5lbs better terms he should confirm that running; hold-up horse who should encounter less problems in this smaller field.
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); course (W); trainer (C); recent form run (12 days);
Minus:
Verdict: wide draw shouldn’t be a problem with his style of running and a strong contender.
The Warrior 5-8-7 (88) Dr 5
13 May Cl 2 Hcap (654) 7f gd/fm Ascot (108) 12/1 2.22l 8/24 off 88
Prominent, ridden over 2f out, on terms with leaders just over 1f out, one pace final furlong
06 May Cl 2 Hcap (323) 7f gd/fm Good (99) 12/1 0.55l 3/15 off 86

Held up towards rear, never clearest of runs from 3f out, still waiting for room over 1f out, weaved through final furlong and finished strongly, nearly snatched 2nd
Just the 2 wins from 25 starts, one each on turf and the AW, but ran well over C&D on his penultimate start when perhaps unlucky not to have finished closer to Gossiping (-1); however, looked a little outclassed in the Victoria Cup and it’s hard to see him reversing the running with Shady McCoy, especially on 5lbs worse terms; nevertheless, noted that a first-time visor is fitted today.
Plus: class (F); distance (F); course (F); trainer (14d); recent form run (12 days);
Minus: going;
Verdict: poor win rate suggests first-time visor will have to have major effect to make him a contender
Gossiping 5-8-7 (88) Dr 4
06 May Cl 2 Hcap (323) 7f gd/fm Good (99) 25/1 0.5l 1/15 off 85
Tracked leaders, gaps appeared and closed to challenge just over 1f out, edged left but led inside final furlong, driven out
Gelded and changed yards last season and it seems that Moore has found the key as he’s won 4 of his 6 starts since the start of the year, the latest a career best over C&D here earlier in the month when The Warrior (+1) was only 0.55l back in 3rd; raised 3lbs for that and meets the visor-wearing TW on 1lb worse terms, but no surprise were here to confirm that running.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (19 days);
Minus: raised 3lbs;
Verdict: much improved since change of yard and must be considered a contender.
Castle Harbour 4-9-7 (102) Dr 1
Unraced at 2yo, won first 2 starts as a 3yo and then finished 5th in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, but things haven’t gone as well since and was gelded between seasons; yet to show form this season and handicapper has dropped him 3lbs today; nevertheless still has something to prove and fitted with first-time cheekpieces today.
Plus: going (W); distance (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent outing (35 days); down 3lbs;
Minus: class; course (?);
Verdict: chance on best of last year’s form, but not the strongest contender in my book.
Mutawathea 6-9-5 (100) Dr 2
Has run some top class races since moving to his current yard back in April 2015, yet he is still to get his head in front on turf despite such efforts as 3rd in last season’s Bunbury; had 3 races in the Gulf over the winter, but hasn’t run since so chances have to be rated as questionable, especially on turf.
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (F); course (F); down 2lbs;
Minus: 91-day break; yet to win on turf;
Verdict: doubtless will win someday, but likely not today.

Not being very original, but on current season form I have to go with Shady McCoy from Gossiping with The Warrior best of the rest.
