Wednesday 31 May

Well Monday worked out a treat, but we've been struck by the blight of a non-runner today I'm afraid, thus negating the race. However, having done the hard work I'll put it up.

Nottingham 15.50 Cl 2 Hcap 162 (109) 8.5f gd – 8 Run (7)

Last year – 162 (104) gd/fm 8 ran
Spirit Raiser 4/1 F 5-9-4 (98) Dr 9 by 1.5l from Off Art 6/1 6-8-11 (96) Dr 2

Dragon Mall 4-9-7 (102) Dr 5
Sole success came over 8f on the AW at Chelmsford as a 2yo; gelded after that season but while never beaten far enjoyed no further success last season; had 3 starts in Meydan over the winter, but hasn’t run since February.
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); trainer (14d);
Minus: course (?); 97-day break;
Verdict: more sensible target for his return, though break counts against his being a strong contender.
Big Baz 7-9-7 (102) Dr 7
22 Apr Cl 2 Hcap (310) 8f gd/fm Newb 50/1 3.75l 9/21 off 105
led until ridden and headed over 1f out, lost 2nd inside final furlong, no extra
C&D winner off 99 in similar conditions in June 2015 and won listed race at Kempton that November; however, after a busy winter season didn’t return till October last year when L/8 in a Gr 3 Stks at Newmarket; needed Doncaster run on return, but better effort in Newbury Spring Cup when 3.25l back of Another Touch (-9); meets him on 5lbs better terms today.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); trainer (C); form run lto; down 3lbs;
Minus: 39-day break;
Verdict: older contender but not discounted if building on Spring Cup run and a contender.
Another Touch 4-9-3 (98) Dr 2
18 May List Hcap (280) 8f gd/sf York 11/1 4.75l 4/17 off 97
held up mid-division, ridden over 1f out, kept on inside final furlong
22 Apr Cl 2 Hcap (310) 8f gd/fm Newb 16/1 0.5l 2.21 off 96
held up in mid-division, steady headway over 2f out, chased leaders over 1f out, ran on into 2nd inside final furlong until well inside final furlong, 2nd again post
Won a Newmarket under today’s jockey last August and after disappointing in the Spring Mile at Doncaster put in a career best on the Newbury Spring Cup with Big Baz (+9) 3.25l further back; meets him on 5lbs worse terms today but could well confirm the running; didn’t run badly at York either from a higher draw lto.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (13 days); down in class;
Minus: course (?); up 1lb;
Verdict: in fine form and a contender.
White Lake 5-9-6 (101) Dr 6 N/R
18 May List Hcap (280) 8f gd/sf York 11/1 8.5l 9/17 off 103
held up mid-division, headway over 2f out, not much room over 1f out, ridden and weakened inside final furlong
Moved from the Cumani yard at the start of last year, but just the 2 starts last season and a return at York this; they don’t quite seem to have him sorted yet though, as he’s run with a hood, without headgear, and in blinkers latest; today they’re trying a visor for the first time; meets Another Touch on 3lbs better terms today for 3.75l.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (F); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent outing (13 days); down 2lbs; down in class;
Minus: course (?);
Verdict: not without chances if building on York run in the visor and a possible contender.
Algaith 5-9-10 (105) Dr 1
03 May List Stks (210) 8f gd/fm Asc 16/1 4.25l 4/7 off 105
steadied start, pulled hard and led group of 3 towards near side, disputing 2nd overall as groups merged approaching halfway, every chance over 1f out, no extra inside final furlong
Gelded and then moved to new yard last season; had little chance in making his return in the Royal Hunt Cup, but ran well enough to be runner-up in a listed race at Pontefract in July; not seen again and likely needed the race at Ascot earlier this month; difficult to predict how he’ll shape on only his third hcap start.
Plus: class (W); distance (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent outing (28 days); down in class;
Minus: going; course (?);
Verdict: another with scope for improvement and thus a possible contender.

A very trappy affair with several having scope for improvement, including a pair of ex-Italian horses. Lacking a horse in outstanding form, the closest would be Another Touch who set a career best at Newbury and didn’t have the best if the draw at York. However, a case could also be made for C&D winner Big Baz and White Lake if coming on for their latest runs. A race perhaps to leave alone, but my tentative suggest would be Another Touch from Big Baz, especially now White Lake is a N/R.
