Thanks to a day's holiday yesterday, managed to look at these.

Epsom 14.35 Cl 2 Hcap 249 (105) 8.5f gd – 12 Run

Last year – 249 (99) gd/sf 12 ran
Examiner 11/2 5-9-0 (92) Dr 7 by 0.5l from Instant Attraction 6/1 5-9-7 (99) Dr 5
Spring Offensive 12/1 4-8-13 (91) Dr 4 was 3.35l 6th

Remarkable 4-9-7 (105) Dr 2
13 May Cl 2 Hcap (650 d) 7f gd/fm Asc 15/2 4l 10/24 off 105
held up towards rear, headway in centre over 1f out, plugged on, never troubled leaders
15 Oct Cl 2 Hcap (1560 u) 8f gd Asc 12/1 1l 2/19 off 103
raced far side, chased leaders, ridden to challenge over 1f out, led approaching final furlong, edged right and headed inside final furlong, chased winner and held when wandered and hung left well inside final furlong
Gelded mid-season last year and put up a career best over8f at Ascot in October; dropped back 7f for return in Victoria Cup and did best of those running on the outer; runs off same mark today and hopefully should appreciate the step back up in trip; gives weight to the field though.
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (F); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent outing (20 days);
Minus: course (?);
Verdict: fair enough return run and a contender
Mutarakez 5-8-4 (88) Dr 10
20 May Cl 2 Hcap (250 u) 8f sf Newb 10/1 1.5l 3/15 off 87
held up behind centre, headway over 3f out, led inside final 2f, soon ridden, edged badly right towards stands side rail1f out, headed inside final furlong, kept on
Not won since May 2015 but looked likely to break his 9-race streak since being gelded until swerving off the straight and narrow at Newbury lto; previously had been behind Spring Offensive and Stipulate in the Thirsk Hunt Cup.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); trainer (C); recent form run (13 days);
Minus: course (?); up 1lb;
Verdict: antics at Newbury raise doubts about being a contender today.
Spring Offensive 5-8-9 (93) Dr 5
06 May Cl 2 Hcap (160 d) 8f gd/fm Thir 13/2 F 2.5l dht3/17 off 93
held up mid-division, ridden and headway over 1f out, kept on inside final furlong
Only 2lbs higher than when 6th in last year’s renewal in a season where he frequently ran with promise; likely needed the run when 5/17 in the Irish Lincoln on return and followed up by dead-heating with Stipulate for 3rd in the Thirsk Hunt Cup; runs off the same mark today.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (F); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (27 days);
Minus:
Verdict: appears to be running back into form and a contender.
GK Chesterton 4-8-10 (94) Dr 6
19 May Cl 3 Hcap (90 d) 8f sf Nwmk 5/2 2l 1/6 off 89
made all, ridden clear over 1f out, driven and wandered under pressure inside final furlong, ran on
Won 1 of his 4 starts as a 3yo and gelded between seasons; promising return at Nottingham and then won on sf at Newmarket despite wandering in the final furlong; has been raised 5lbs for that and is up in class, but further improvement expected; noted that both wins have come on sf although ran well enough on fast ground at Nottingham on return.
Plus: distance (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (14 days);
Minus; class (?); going; course (?); up 5lbs; up in class;
Verdict: looks progressive sort, but this toughest test so far and a contender with a question.

I’ve discounted Sixties Groove as he’s making seasonal debut having gelded between seasons but is dropping back in trip to a distance he’s yet to win at. I’m also dubious about Stipulate despite his dead-heating with Spring Offensive for third in the Thirsk Hunt Cup after being dropped back to 8f. While he’s better off at the weights today thanks to his rider’s claim I’m not sure he’ll give the same running for an out-of-form yard. Of the four I have included on my list I’ll have to question Mutarakez love for the game nowadays as he looks one of those rare individuals that has been soured by gelding. Of the remaining trio I’m going with Remarkable from GK Chesterton and Spring Offensive.

Epsom 15.45 Cl 2 Hcap 311 (100) 10f gd – 14 Run

Last year – 311 (106) gd/sf 10 ran
Imshivalla 25/1 5-8-6 (88) Dr 1 by 1.25l from Gold Prince 16/1 4-8-3 (90) Dr 4
What About Carlo 9/2 5-9-4 (100) Dr 3 was 2.5l 3rd

What About Carlo 6-9-10 (100) Dr 8
Runs off the same mark as when 3rd in last year’s renewal, although 6lbs more physical weight; inclined to ignore his run at Chelmsford last month as he’s 0/2 on the AW and it was likely just a workout for this; good record here and stable in good form, but suspect he might prefer softer ground.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent outing (8 days);
Minus:
Verdict: had better preparation n last year and might be hard pressed to be a leading contender.
Brorocco 4-9-0 (90) Dr 9
11 May Cl 2 Hcap (190 d) 10.5f gd Chest 4/1 4.5l 2/7 off 89
dwelt, in rear, good headway on outer over 2f out, went 3rd over 1f out, kept on to chase winner towards finish, always well held
26 Apr Cl 2 Hcap (280 d) 10f gd Eps 7/1 1l 1/11 off 85
held up in rear, headway on outer over 1f out, led entering final furlong, ridden out
Can have a mind of his own on occasions, but was on his gamed here when taking the City & Suburban here in April; followed up with a decent effort at Chester considering he had to come from some way back; runs off a 5lbs higher mark than April, but could have improved enough to make his mark again.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (22 days);
Minus: up 1lb;
Verdict: proven course form and is fit, so a contender once more.
Imshivalla 6-8-4 (80) Dr 7
Runs off an 8lbs lower mark than when taking last year’s renewal, which is indicative of her form since; moreover, that was on gd/sf and it’s better ground today.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent outing (13 days); down 3lbs;
Minus: up in class
Verdict: hard to fancy on this season’s form and not a strong contender.
Fidaawy 4-9-8 (98) Dr 12
29 Apr Cl 3 Hcap (80 d) 10f gd/fm Donc 2/1 F 0.5l 1/8 off 94
made all, hard driven over 1f out, ran on strongly
Not overly raced and stepped up on previous form in first-time hood to win at Doncaster on his return at the end of April; has been raised 4lbs for that, but likely there’s more to come this year.
Plus: distance (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (34 days);
Minus: class; going; course (?); up 4lbs; up in class;
Verdict: with improvement again likely, a contender.

There have been some big-priced winners of late and looking at this field it would be no surprise if another one was in the offing. Unless the rains come I can’t see Imshivalla entering the equation and much the same could be said for What About Carlo for all that he usually goes well here. So I’m left with the two at the front of the market and prefer Brorocco from Fidawwy with What About Carlo best of the rest.
