On the Patternform facebook group on Wednesday I noted:

The official rating played out quite well on the first day of Royal Ascot in non handicape races with official ratings -

Day 1
(G1) Ribchester (125) WON 11/10f,
(G1) Lady Aurelia (121) WON 7/2f
(G1) Churchill (123) x

For the following three days I uploaded these three sets of selections

Day 2
The runner top rated on official ratings in today's Ascot races are :
2.30 (G3) - Le Brivido WON 2/1
3.40 (G2) - Smart Call x
4.20 (G1) - Highland Reel WON 9/4 - Jack Hobbs x
5.35 (listed) - Rain Goddess - 2nd 7/1 (actually included in error - but still included in totals)

Day 3

4.20 - Limato
5.35 - Us Army Ranger

How did you come up with US Army Ranger in the 5.35?

check out top racing post rating, combined with the top 3 on official rating, and you get these
BIG ORANGE/BARNEY ROY/CON TE PARTITO/CORONET. no R.P.R for count octave.

OK I thought you were using patternform. Gives Thomas Hobson as the favourite for me.

So do you add together the top RPR and last 3 ORs?

yeah darkone, it seems that the group and class1 races, (normally 2 or 3 per day)
concentrate on top or joint top and 2nd top rated on official ratings. but must have
an equally good racing post rating to match. but these events are run once a year,
so safe to say back to normal racing now, but will keep in mind for future races that
carry weight. ie group down to listed but must be class1, hope makes sense...

The first couple of days at Ascot were especially kind to horses with an official rating very close to the highest for the race, where they have not raced in the UK with an official rating in the last six months. Point being that these horses are not there to make up the numbers, are obviously considered to have ability by the handicaper, but sometimes they do and sometimes they dont

Cases in point : Lady Aurelia, Thomas Hobson, Le Brivido, Con Te Patiro,
Note : Thomas Hobson included because hadn't raced on flat in last six months.

The second half of Ascot was not kind to the same type of horses.

generally, a lot like non 2yo / maiden races at the start of the day.. they often run to ratings.. but as the day (or meeting) lengthens things go to pot. My old trainer / jockey wants a win to pay for the rest of the day theory
