Sunday 27th August

Postby Devasteve » Sun Aug 27, 2017 11:30 am

Much as expected yesterday, although I wasn't too displeased with my Ebor effort. Managed to find time today to look at a 3yo handicap at Goodwood and hope to look at the Ripon Rowels on Monday.

Goodwood 3.30 Cl 2 3yo-Hcap 311 (97) 10f gd – 9 Run

Last year – 156 (99) gd/fm 4 ran
Zhui Feng 5/1 3-9-7 (99) Dr 4 by 0.02l from New Caledonia 5/1 3-8-10 (88) Dr 1

Frontispiece 3-8-12 (88) Dr 6
03 Aug Cl 2 3yo-Hcap (311 u) 10f sf Good (100) 7/1 1.25 2/13 off 85
In touch in last quartet but niggled along, headway 4f out, stayed far side and led over 2f out, driven over 1f out, headed and stayed on same pace inside final furlong
Won 7f mdn at Ascot last September on only start as a 2yo and made a winning return over today’s distance at Sandown in early June; rather disappointed when favourite but 3/5 back there in early July, but bounced back with solid effort over C&D here 3 weeks ago when runner-up to previous winner Good Omen with Emenem (+9) well beaten back in 9th; has been raised 3lbs for that but should be more to come on only his 5th start and interesting jockey booking.
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); course (F); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (24 days);
Minus: up 3lbs;
Verdict: (13) never out of the frame in four starts, proven at this level and likely more to come, so a contender.
Eynhallow 3-9-2 (92) Dr 5
27 Jul Cl 4 Hcap (58) 10f gd/sf Sand (87) 4/6 F 3l 2/8 off 87
Held up in last pair, shaken up and progress over 2f out, chased winner 1f out but 4 lengths down, stayed on but no significant impression
Disappointing in 3 starts as 2yo and gelded last autumn; began this season by taking a Cl 4 hcap over C&D here at the end of May and followed up with placed effort in a Cl 3 here the following month when just a nk ahead on Anythingtoday (+1); back to winning ways when dropped to Cl 4 at Sandown last month and then runner-up to an improving handicapper completing a hat-trick there 8 days later when taking on older horse for the first time; runs off 5lbs higher today and is up 2 classes, but is back among his own age group.
Plus: going (W); distance (W); course (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (31 days);
Minus: class (?); up 5lbs; up 2 classes;
Verdict: (10) proven over C&D and could improve again back among own age group, a contender.
Tribal Conquest 3-8-13 (89) Dr 8
05 Aug Cl 5 3yo-Mdn (29 d) 10f gd Donc 13/8 F 4.5l 1/11
Prominent on inner, headway to lead over 2f out, ridden clear over 1f out, readily
Improved in his 3 mdn runs this term, proving an easy winner when upped to this trip at Doncaster on his latest start; now goes handicapping off an initial mark of 89.
Plus: going (W); distance (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (22 days);
Minus: class (?); course (?); up 3 classes; hcap debut;
Verdict: (8) improved on each start, but looks a tougher task for his hcap debut and not the strongest contender perhaps.
Karawan 3-8-8 (84) Dr 4
05 Aug Cl 4 Mdn (81 u) 10f AW Chelm 8/11 F 4l 1/8 off 84
Made all, ridden well over 1f out, stayed on and drew clear inside final furlong, comfortably
Had already been gelded before making his racecourse debut in a 7f mdn at Yarmouth last September where he led before fading in the final furlong; placed in both his turf starts over further this year before getting off the mark when dropped to this distance on his AW debut at Chelmsford earlier in the month in a first-time tongue-tie on his return from a 3-month break; equipment again fitted as he makes his hcap debut back on turf.
Plus: distance (W); trainer (14d); trainer (C); recent form run (19 days);
Minus: class (?); going (?); course (?); up 2 classes; hcap debut;
Verdict: (8) improving gelding who could well have more to give in hcaps, a contender.
Anythingtoday 3-9-7 (97) Dr 9
12 Aug Cl 2 Hcap (129 u) 10f gd/sf Nwmkt (98) 11/4 F 1.5l 3/7 off 97
Held up, switched left 2f out, headway over 1f out, soon ridden, not clear run well inside final furlong, stayed on same pace towards finish
Won 1 of 4 starts as a 2yo and gelded between seasons; has won 2 of 5 starts over today’s distance this term, the latest at Bath at the start of the month; was running under a 6lbs penalty when upped to Cl 2 at Newmarket a fortnight ago and did well to finish 3rd under the circumstances; runs off the same mark today and that form franked by the 4th, Eddystone Rock winning at York yesterday.
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); trainer (C); recent form run (15 days);
Minus: course;
Verdict: (10) consistent enough sort and a contender.

Competitive 3yo handicap and there’s not many without some sort of chance. I always have problems with horses coming from maidens as do Karawaan and Tribal Conquest and while they well be thereabouts, especially the former, I have to leave them from my final considerations. These involve Frontispiece, Anythingtoday and Eynhallow and the usual problem of picking the right pair. Eynhallow is the only course winner, but he’s never won above Cl 4, so I’m going for the other pair who both have form at this level and prefer Frontispiece from Anythingtoday and Eynhallow.
