Sunday 16th June

Wasn’t going to bother today after yesterday’s expected disaster, but I then thought there is perhaps a chance to get a winner in before next week’s period of famine. In fact my selection today appears to meet all the criteria quoted in the letters, well at least as far as I can understand – although that doesn’t say a lot!

Doncaster 15.55 Cl 3 Hcap 79 (87.0) 5f sf – 8 Run

Duke Of Firenze 10-9-7 (90) Dr 7
3/1* Cons 9* AB 170* Lto 616* SF 91* Rat 105*
01 June Cl 2 Hcap (616/92.4) 5d gd/fm Epsom 8/1 8-3 1.5l 7/19 off 89
held up mid-division on stands rail, progress over 2f out, not clear run well over 1f out, ridden and kept on well inside final furlong
25 May Cl 2 Hcap (311/93.5) 5f gd/fm York 16/1 8-4 1.25 1/19 off 85
held up towards rear, headway over 1f out, ran on to lead well inside final furlong, hung left, ran on
Back to form in fine style this season winning at Thirsk and York in May before putting in a noteworthy effort in the Epsom Dash where he may well have been closer with a clear run; raised 1lb for that and up 18 lbs in physical weight today, though drops a long way in class and carried 3lbs more when winning at Thirsk; most consistent, highest on ability and coming from the most valuable race lto, plus with solid ratings support, he looks a strong contender indeed.

Erissimus Maximus 5-9-4 (87) Dr 5
7/1* Con 12* AB 56 Lto 97* SF 85* Rat 103*
Won in similar conditions at Ascot last October off a 5lbs lower mark; carried 9-7 when winning a 55/77.8 over 6f at Windsor in early May off 84. But disappointed on the AW at Chelmsford lto; needs to bounce back from that and not the strongest contender.

Camacho Chief 4-9-12 (95) Dr 6
9/4* Cons 23 AB 59 Lto 104* SF 78 Rat 103*
08 Jun Cl 3 Hcap (104/91.5) 6f hv Hayd 10/1 9-6 2.25l 2/15 off 94
close up, led over 2f out, ridden and headed approaching final furlong, stayed on one pace
All four wins to date have been over 5f, but stepped up on return running when upped to 6f at Haydock lto; drops back to 5f against lesser class opposition, although is asked to carry 6lbs more actual weight off his 1lb higher mark; got to be considered a contender, although it is 5lbs more than he’s won with.

This actually looks to be a two-horse race, which probably means I’m well wide of the mark. However, I’d take Duke Of Firenze to outpoint Camacho Chief.
