Saturday 15th February

Postby Devasteve » Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:42 am

For those who have been wondering where I’ve been of late, I had the misfortune to have a stroke the week following my last posting. Although recovering it is a slow process, especially the typing that throws up countless errors which take an age to settle. It will get better, I promise, but please be patient!

Haydock 15.15 Gr 3 Handicap Chase 570 (147.5) 28.5f hv – 11 run (10 at best)

Last Year – 570 (143.3) gd – 15 ran
Robinsfirth 8/1 10-11-4 (148) by 0.75l from Ramses De Teillee 8/1 7-11-5 (149)
Yala Enki 6/1 F 9-11-5 (156) was 46l 5th
Ballyoptic 12/1 9-11-11 (155) UR before 14th
The Two Amigos 7/1 7-10-12 (142) Fell 14th
Ballyarthur 28/1 9-10-10 (140) Fell 4 out
Pobbles Bay 10/1 9-10-2 (132) Attempting to run out, UR out

Elegant Escape 8-11-12 (162) (161.1)
27 Dec Gr 3 HCh (854/139.4) 39.5f hv Chep 9/4F 11-12 11.5l 6/17 off 160 – 148.2
mid-division, headway on inside 14th, close 6th when mistake 3out, soon beaten, no extra last
Fine effort when 3rd in first-time blinkers at Newbury and failed to gather Welsh National for 2nd year in a row; had breathing op since, but back up 2lbs.
Plus: class; going; distance; form run lto (50 days);
Minus: course (?); up 2lbs (OR);
Verdict: improving, but 11 lbs above last winning mark.
The Two Amigos 8-10-6 (142) (155.9)
27 Dec Gr 3 HCh (854/139.4) 39.5f hv Chep 8/1 10-8 10.25l 5/17 off 142 – 155.9
led after 1st, headed after 7th, led after 12th, headed 3 out, weakened final 150 yards
Only weakened in the last 150 yds in the Welsh National and still finished just ahead of
Elegant Escape, yet he retains the same weight and EE gets 2lbs more – strange!!
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); form run lto (50 days); 2lbs less (wt);
Minus: course;
Verdict: another that has not been hammered for well, and a contender.
Geronimo 9-10-0 (136) (155.2)
18 Jan Gr 2 HCh (437/141.9) 26f hv Hayd 6/1 10-5 7.1l 3/10 off 137 – 155.2
close up, ridden to chase winner 3 out, kept on same pace and lost 2nd close home
PU in Scottish National but built on win over 20f at Newcastle on return with a strong
effort in the Peter Marsh here; meets Vintage Clouds on 12lbs better terms today.
Plus: class (F+); going (W); distance (W); course (F+); form run lto (28 days); down 5lbs (wt); down 1lb (OR); down in class;
Minus:
Verdict: looks the sort who could improve and a likely contender.
Yala Enki 10-11-7 (157) (152.5)
18 Jan Cl 2 Ch (317/) 28.5f hv Taunt 11/10 F 11-0 5.5l 1/6 off 157 –
led and disputed, hit 10th, in front 12th, hit 16th, clear before 3 out, hit next, stumbled on landing last, kept on strongly
27 Dec Gr 3 HCh (854/139.4) 39.5f hv Chep 8/1 11-7 2.75l 3/17 off 155 – 152.5
led until after 1st, prominent, led after 7th, headed after 12th, every chance 3 out, 3rd and held flat, edged right, stayed on
Looks in fine form for the Nichols yard having come over from Venetia, for whom he took this in 2018; however, he’s 11lbs higher now and was well beaten last year off 1lb less
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto (28 days);
Minus: up 7lbs (Wt); up in class;
Verdict: requires a career best to win today, which may be beyond him.

To start with the ones I’ve left out, which include Lord Du Mesnil. He’s in fine form having won three in a row, including the Tommy Whittle here, but he’s got a couple of things against him, 7yos don’t have a great record, and he’s carrying 10lbs more. Talking of that, Vintage Clouds carries 11lbs more. Not for me!

My three against the field are The Two Amigos from Geronimo, and I must, of course, include Yala Enki to follow them home,

I've been regularly scouring the obituary column of the Jakarta Post for Devasteve and have been relieved not to have found any entries!!

A few years ago user Aubrey had a stroke and returned to the fold via a very slow process during his recuperation – I hope your own situation is not as bad and you recover all or as much as is possible of your former mobility and dexterity.
