3.15 Hatdock's Grand National Trial.

With storm Dennis dancing it's way across this sceptred isle it must be pure folly to believe that horses will run to form as expected and that some runners will be less inclined to face up to the lashing rain than others.

That said I do like the chances to both Lord Du Mesnil and Vintage Clouds in the 3.15 at Haydock. They finishes 1st and 3rd in the 31K Tommy Whittle here over a 2.5 furlong shorter trip back in December. Lord Du Mesnil than went on to win a 15K race by a comfortable 9l off a 10lb higher mark last time over today's CD and has gone up another 10lb (a bit harsh but understandable), but being a 7yo may have further improvement, it just difficult to know but the 8.4 on BF look a reasonable risk.

Vintage Cloud who finished 3rd in the Tommy Whittle (12lb pull for 20l) came out next time to win the Grade 2 Peter March here at Haydock. Unlike in his previous race he responded to being nudged and encouraged along mid-race, and really “took it” to the rest of the field and made it a staying test and was about 20l clear over the last. He was eased down on the run-in, but the 2nd and 3rd had a right tussle for the runner up spot and were strongly ridden out but were still 7l behind the winner on the line. The Handicapper has assessed Vintage Cloud as a easy winner and he's been raised 9lb, but if he reproduces that last run (by no means certain) he'll be difficult to beat.

Of the two there is a slight preference for Lord Du Mesnil but a little reverse on the pair could yield a nice windfall.

If either of these win then then it must point to the chances of Calipso Collonges in the Eider next Saturday who finished 2nd in the Tommy Whittle and is running off just a 3lb higher mark.
