Not too much going on today in the handicap realm.

Sandown 15.15 Cl 2 Hcap 87 (91.3) 8f gd – 8 Run

Mustarrid 6-9-4 (92) Dr 8 (81.3)
’19 record: 1/1/6
04/12/19 Cl 2 Hcap (120/96.5) 10f AW Ling 9-3 12/1 9/11 4.1 l off 94 – 93.0
towards rear, short-lived effort over 1f out
30/10/19 Cl 4 Hcap (66/78.6) 8.5f sf Nott 9-10 11/4 1/7 5 l off 84 – 71.3
headway over 3f out, led over 2f out, ridden clear inside final furlong, easily
Plus: distance (W); down 2lbs (OR);
Minus: class; going (?); course (?); up 1lb (wt);
Verdict: won Cl 4 easily over 8.5f at Nottingham, but no show in Cl 2 over 10f at Lingfield off a 10lbs higher mark; runs off 8lbs higher than highest winning mark and has only won in Cl 4; asking a lot even with De Sousa riding.
Solid Stone 4-9-6 (94) Dr 2 (99.6)
’19 record: 1/3/6
31/08/19 Cl 2 Hcap (260/92.3) 10f gd/fm Sand 8-7 4/1 3/9 2.25 l off 94 – 91.6
raced keenly, held up in mid-division on inside over 3f out, ridden and plugged on in 3rd in final furlong, never going pace to reach leading pair
25/08/19 Cl 3 Hcap (98/88.8) 8f fm Yarm 9-8 10/11 F 2/5 1.5 l off 94 – 88.7
held up in touch, pushed along 2f out, ridden and every chance 1f out, kept on same pace, took 2nd last strides
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (F); course (F);
Minus: up 13lbs (wt);
Verdict: won over 8f as a 2yo, but although placed at that distance won over 10f at Newmarket first up, and closed the season by placing at Sandown, although not fast enough to reach leaders; still 9lbs above mark of Newmarket win; not sure a drop in trip is what he wants.
The Gill Brothers 4-9-2 (90) Dr 1 (102.9)
’19 record: 2/2/4
12/12/19 Cl 2 Hcap (129/95.1) 8f AW Chelm 8-6 9/2 2/8 0.5 l off 88 – 90.9
steadied start, pulled hard in last pair, headed on inside over 1f out, ridden and stayed on inside final furlong, went 2nd last strides, not reach winner
Plus: class (F); distance (W);
Minus: going (?); course (?); up 2lbs (OR); up 10lbs (wt)
Verdict: the only question is can he reproduce his AW form on turf, because he was a consistent improver last season.

Unless the French import Elegant Light proves worthy of top weight on her English debut this looks as if it should be a two-horse race. Solid Stone has looked a bit one-paced at the end of his races and thus I’m prepared to take a chance on The Gill Brothers who was progressive on the AW last year and if he can relay that to turf he looks hard to beat.

Doncaster 15.25 Cl 3 Hcap 57 (87.9) 8f gd/sf – 12 Run

Asdaa 4-9-5 (89) Dr 2 (97.9)
’20 record: 2/3/7
04/06/20 Cl 3 (67/91.7) 7f Nwmkt 9-1 12/1 3/12 1.75 l off 89 – 88.9
tracked leaders, ridden and slightly outpaced 2f out, stayed on towards finish
Plus: class (F); up in distance;
Minus: going (?); distance (?); course (?); up 4lbs (wt);
Verdict: import from C. Weld stable and has already struck twice this year winning at Chelmsford and Wolverhampton before the break; returned at Newmarket last week and although relatively unfancied was noted staying on towards the finish; first attempt at 8f, but on the basis of that should stay; not without a chance.
Joyful Mission 4-9-6 (90) Dr 3 (82.8+)
’19 record: 1/0/4
25/08/19 Cl 2 Hcap (249/93.8) 10f gd Good 9-3 100/30 L/4 8.75l off 92 – 74.8
pulled hard, soon led, ridden and headed over 2f out, weakened rapidly
28/07/19 Cl 5 Mdn 8fd gd Pont 9-5 4/5 F 1.12 5 l
made all, pushed clear entering final furlong, comfortable, eased towards home
Plus: distance (W); drop in class;
Minus: class (?); going (?); course (?);
Verdict: won mdn simply enough, but set off at a great rate of knots over 10f on hcap debut and never lasted home; maybe worth another chance dropped in distance and class, and with tongue-tie fitted
Triple Distilled 4-9-4 (88) Dr 10 (84.7)
’19 record: 2/2/7
27/7/19 Cl 4 Hcap (100/79.6) 7f sf York (100/79.6) 9-5 11/4 F 1/9 0.25 l off 83 – 74.7
held up mid-division, ridden over 2f out, kept on inside final furlong, led close home
Plus: class (F); going (F); down 1lb (wt);
Minus: distance; course; up in class; up 5lbs (OR); up in trip;
Verdict: Won back-to-back handicaps over 7f at York and the went for wind operation; not been seen since but has only been upped 5lbs for the win and ease of breathing should bring him more than that; question if he can get 8f , as he didn’t last the trip when tried here on return last season.
Elerfan 6-9-3 (87) Dr 6 (90.7)
’19 record: 0/2/3
08/06/19 Cl 3 Hcap (93/88.0) 7.5f gf/fm Bev 9-5 9/2 7/8 7.5 l off 88 – 73.1
chased leaders, effort on outside over 1f out, weakened final furlong
08/05/19 Cl 4 Hcap (77/86.1) 7f gd/sf Chest 9-7 9/2 2/14 0.25 l off 85 – 79.7
raced wide close up, headway to lead over a furlong out, pressed inside final furlong, headed final strides.
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (W); down 1lb (OR); down 2lbs (wt);
Minus: course (?);
Verdict: hasn’t won a hcap yet, or any further than 7.5f, so a question.

Joyful Mission is another strong favourite coming from an upset, although he has no problem with the trip unlike some of the others potentially. However, Asdaa was noted staying on over 7f on his return last week and is just preferred with perhaps Triple Distilled proving a wind operation will do him the world of good and snatching 3rd ahead of Elerfan and Tricorn.
