World Cup 2018

Postby martinkil » Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:53 am

The first match is on Thursday 14 June at 4.00pm between Russia and Saudi Arabia

ATR has a couple of guides -http://www.attheraces.com/tips/atr-tipsters/world-cup-2018-team-by-team-guide
and http://www.attheraces.com/tips/atr-tipsters/fifa-world-cup-2018-best-bets

Does anyone have a strong opinion on any good bets for this years World Cup

BBC sport have a great article on predicting the winner of the World Cup via stats - Belgium was the pick!

Worth a read.......Personally I’ll be waiting for an octopus to give me some winners!

Like all major football tournaments the English fans will no doubt all thinking we have a chance of winning, so beware England will be over bet and most likely no value at all. I wouldnt be brave or knowledgeable enough to pick an overall winner but surely with the outstanding individuals available to Belgium they must be in with a great chance, currently around 11/1. Most winning sides have a great spine to the team, Belgium have Thibaut Courtois of Chelsea in goal, centre backs like Jan Vertonghen Vincent Kompany and Toby Alderweireld. In midfield De Bruyne, Dembele and Felaini have all proved their worth in this years Premier League. In Eden Hazard they have someone who could easily be player of the tournament backed up by Romelu Lukaku. Lets all hope the competion lives up to the hype, that we all show a profit and that England actually give us something to shout about.

In terms of value, I feel it's Morocco, taken a few nibbles at the 300-500+ which has been available on the exchanges, with a view to potentially trading out if they make it through the group (hard to predict what will happen to their odds but should offer a trade-out). Their form on paper is excellent and they look the best outsiders in the competition; some talented players with plenty of top level experience across Europe, excellent coach, strong defensively and bang in goals on the counter attack. Don't need much on to trade out if they make it to the last 16 or better. Spain have their managerial question mark which could work either way for them, but it's a likely negative. Live dark horses. Best wishes & thank you as ever for PF :)

2017
1 September 20172018 WCQ Morocco 6–0 Mali Rabat, Morocco
5 September 20172018 WCQ Mali 0–0 Morocco Bamako, Mali
7 October 20172018 WCQ Morocco 3–0 Gabon Casablanca, Morocco
10 October 2017Friendly South Korea 1–3 Morocco Biel/Bienne, Switzerland
11 November 20172018 WCQ Ivory Coast 0–2 Morocco Abidjan, Ivory Coast

2018
23 March 2018Friendly Serbia 1–2 Morocco Turin, Italy
27 March 2018Friendly Morocco 2–0 Uzbekistan, Morocco
31 May 2018Friendly Morocco 0–0 Ukraine Geneva, Switzerland
4 June 2018Friendly Morocco 2–1 Slovakia Geneva, Switzerland
9 June 2018Friendly Estonia 1–3 Morocco Tallinn, Estonia

While it doesn't necessarily mean that much, they beat Slovakia 2-1 in a warm-up game on 4 June; England have played the Solvaks three times in recent years, with results of 0-0, and two wins (1-0 and 2-1). If we do use this as a guide to Morocco's ability, then you'd theoretically expect them to give England a decent game, and by all accounts I wouldn't expect England to hammer them. Good luck.

Even though they won 5-0 I really wasn't that impressed with Russia. Saudi Arabia were awful and both Uruguay and Egypt will be much harder to beat.

It's halftime in the Uruguay v Egypt match and Uruguay are being well held by Egypt. That could change if Uruguay can get some crosses going, but they haven't quite delivered a killer punch yet. The 0-0 is down to 3.25 on BF - but I still think we could get at least one goal during the 2nd half.

<update> - Well Egypt put in a good defensive performance and were only overcome from a set piece header. Will be interesting to see what Egypt can do against Russia.

Was disappointed with the result for Morocco, with the last minute goal being very unlucky. They started the game very promisingly and looked sure to break the deadlock, but Iran came back into it as Morocco looked jaded after the strong start. That said, some of the result we've seen so far, leave things interesting, this Group included.

Good luck all...

Having read the two ATR articles, I ended up with three bets on betfair.
1 - Portugal at 27 - well pleased when Ronaldo hit that late equaliser.
2 - Peru at 180 - Disappointed they couldn't hold on to a draw against Denmark. Really up against it now
3 - Mexico at 180 - Well pleased with their performance against Germany - deserved the win against a below par Germany. Must have a great chance of going through to the last 16 and maybe even heading the group.
