Alan Berry

Not sure what's happened with Alan Berry who for the last 4 years has been running with a strike rate of
between 3% and 4%. Maybe he has a new assistant trainer!!

For the period Jan to May over the last few years he's had the following runs - wins

2011 57 runs 0 wins 0%
2012 58 runs 1 win 1.7%
2013 86 runs 4 wins 4.7%
2014 92 runs 5 wins 5.4%
2015 16 runs 3 wins 18.8% - a lot fewer runners but a much higher strike rate (2 wins from the same horse)

Maybe he has a lot fewer horses in the yard due to his abysmal strike rate in previous years? Trainer patterns can be a goldmine - until they stop working for no apparent reason! I used to have a cast iron system based on Saeed Bin Suroor + first time in a handicap which averaged 30 points profit with a 24 percent strike rate every year from 2009-2013...Last year 2 winners from 29 runners and a 23 point loss :(

This has been covered recently elsewhere and the explanation is that Alan Berry is very good at going for early season handicaps notably at Hamilton and has a good record in these going back a few years. By the end of the turf season the stats will be more or less back to normal.
